  AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL

The White House has announced a series of actions to “increase fairness in the rental market and further principles of fair housing.” The announcement coincides with the White House’s release of its Blueprint for a Renter’s Bill of Rights and the launch of its Resident Centered Housing Challenge.

This action follows several months of discussions between numerous stakeholders of which the National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM®), as well as other industry groups, was a part. Early on, NARPM® twice urged the White House to concentrate on housing supply and avoid proposals like national rent control.

NARPM® is committed to work with the White House for proven realistic policies that would increase affordable housing opportunities, particularly policies that help renters at risk of eviction for non-payment of rent and policies that address the cost of housing:

  • Support and work for rental assistance as the best means to support tenants at risk of eviction for non-payment of rent.
  • Support refundable tax credits for landlords who forgive rent for tenants in danger of eviction for non-payment of rent.
  • Support legislation like the Choice in Affordable Housing Act that reform Section 8 while maintaining the voluntary nature of the program.
  • Support of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program that helps fund the development of additional housing units for American families.
  • Support of local land-use policies driven by sound planning, science, engineering, and the future needs of the community, and geared toward the development of a variety of well-built, affordable housing choices for both current and future residents so that we can address the root driver of housing costs: supply

As this process moves forward, NARPM® will continue to advocate for property managers and push back against policies that would be harmful to its members and the owners they represent.
